Hughes becomes seasons first Sooner Late Model repeat winner at Enid Speedway

Updated: May 3, 2021

John Rittenoure - ENID, Okla. (May 1, 2021) - Kip Hughes became the seasons first Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series repeat winner and fittingly it came at his home track on Saturday.

The three-time defending champion led the final 13 laps around the high-banked Enid Speedway to capture the Twister Nationals and move closer to the series points lead.

John Herring drove into the early lead and had to endure five yellow flags in the first five laps before he could set the pace in the 20-lapper. Herring set a strong pace after racing finally resumed in earnest and he was chased off the final restart by points leader Hayden Ross who used the restarts to quickly move him from ninth starting position into second. But Hughes was already in third and battled with Ross for second.

Hughes finally secured the second spot, but Herring looked to be setting a winning pace till he suffered mechanical problems and fell out of the race. Hughes took over the lead and Ross gave chase, but could not get close enough to challenge. Damian Patocka ended up with third followed by Adam Popp in four 4th and Scott Donell rounding out the top five.

The CWT Sooner Late Models Series will be back in action next Saturday at 81 Speedway.

Sooner Late Model Series

The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
