by John Rittenoure - ENID, Okla. (September 11, 2021) - Kip Hughes took advantage of a lap 6 restart and bolted into a lead he would never give up to win the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series feature Saturday at Enid Speedway.
The evening started with a beautiful tribute to 9-11 and the 13 servicemen who lost they lives recently in Afghanistan. All 76 racers in the pits paraded around the 3/8’s mile oval carrying American Flags and were joined by a large number of area fire trucks.
When the CWT Sooner Late Model feature got underway to close out the night, Gary Kilbourn jumped into the early lead over a 22-car until a yellow flag waved on lap 6. Hayden Ross pulled up on the outside of Dustin Allen as the two roared down the front stretch on the top edge of the track. The two made contact and Ross spun approaching turn one just missing the turn one guardrail. Ross managed was able to restart from the rear of the field.
On the restart sixth place Hughes caught the field napping. The series points leader gunned his late model around the top five, including leader Kilbourn, out of turn four and crossed the start-finish line with the lead. From that point on it was a different race with Hughes setting a fast pace on the way to his seventh victory of the season.
Kilbourn fell back and became involved in a late race crash. Ross McCarthney moved into second and closed on Hughes at one point. But the challenge was short lived. Troy Bynum raced past Darren Moses to finish third and Ross worked his way from the back of the field to finish fifth behind Moses.
The next CWT Sooner Late Model Series event is September 24 on the Thunderbird Speedway half-mile in Muskogee followed by a return to Crawford County Speedway in Van Buren, Arkansas on Saturday, September 25.

About Sooner Late Model Series
The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
